Documenting the Instagram Community with @technopaul’s “Instagram Is”

“In a culture immersed in technology, Instagram is reviving adventure, face to face community and real relationships. How can something so digital actually get people out from behind their devices into the analog world?”

When filmmaker Paul Tellefsen (@technopaul) was asked to make a trailer for a “fake movie” as an assignment in his senior year at UT Dallas, he decided to take a look at the community he’d fallen into through Instagram. After finishing the trailer, Paul felt he had to continue exploring this community and telling their stories, so his “fake” film became his senior capstone, and he set out on a trip across the United States to make his vision a reality. After months of filming, directing, editing and marketing, Instagram Is finally premiered last night.

Check out Paul’s short documentary to hear the experiences of people from across the Instagram community and the adventures they’ve shared.

Introducing Photos of You

Photos are memories of the people, places and moments that mean the most to us. We have always sought to give you simple and expressive ways to bring the stories behind your photos to life. Your captions and hashtags capture the “what?” and your Photo Map answers the “where?” but until today we’ve never quite been able to answer the “who?”.

Today, we’re excited to introduce Photos of You and bring you a new way to share and discover stories on Instagram. When you upload a photo to Instagram, you’re now able to add people as easily as you add hashtags. Only you can add people to your photos, so you have control over the images you share. And it doesn’t stop at people—you can add any account on Instagram, whether it’s your best friend, favorite coffee shop or even that adorable dog you follow.

There will now be a Photos of You section on your profile. When someone adds you to a photo, you’ll receive a notification and the photo will appear in your Photos of You. Want to make sure you like the photo first? No problem: you can easily adjust your settings so nothing appears on your profile until you approve it. Before your Photos of You section is visible to other people, you’ll have until May 16th to play around and get used to the feature. You can find more information about how Photos of You works and how to control your visibility at help.instagram.com.

Instagram for iOS version 3.5 is currently available for download in Apple’s App Store, and Instagram for Android version 3.5 is now available on Google Play.

Learning More About Your Favorite Instagrammers with ‘Like Knows Like’

Learn more about Marije and Bas at likeknowslike.com, and follow them on Instagram at @marijekuiper and @bas_berkhout.

Struck by a bout of wanderlust—partly spurred by the global community of creative people they follow on Instagram—Dutch duo Marije Kuiper, a documentary photographer, and Bas Berkhout, a documentary filmmaker, set out on a journey to meet and learn about the folks who inspire them on a daily basis.

The result is Like Knows Like, a website full of documentaries, profiles and interviews with talented people from across the artistic spectrum.

Among those interviewed by Bas and Marije were several artists documenting their work through Instagram. “Every day we wake up and go to bed with images that illustrate their lives and work,” says Bas. “Through Instagram, we’ve become acquainted with unique artists and people we admire, and we wanted to know more about their work and personal lives.”

Kelsey Brookes

Kelsey Brookes (@kelseybrookes), a San Diego, California-based painter, shares through Instagram the process of creating his highly detailed, psychedelic paintings.

Marije and Bas found Kelsey through the Suggested Users list and Instagram blog. “Kelsey’s story was a recognition of what we felt spiritually growing up as adults,” says Bas. “[Through our early adult life], we try to define our identity and then, naturally, we let go of that image again.”

Ike Edeani

Nigerian-born Ike Edeani (@ikedeani) moved to Ohio in 1999 to study architecture. Eventually he discovered his love of art and design and moved to San Francisco where he is a photographer and art director. His Instagram account documents the people, architecture and scenery of San Francisco.

“I found Ike early on through Ryan Schude (@ryanschude), who posts great photos of old cars parked on the street,” Marije says.

“Ike is a former architect. And he’s from Nigeria. Now he makes a living as an documentary photographer in San Francisco. A person with such a bio must have a story to tell,” says Bas. “His story and experiences taught us to have faith in the future and trust ourselves.”

Lisa Congdon

Lisa Congdon (@lisacongdon) is a painter and illustrator living in San Francisco, California. Her followers get an intimate glimpse into her day-to-day work crafting drawings and paintings for some of America’s biggest companies. She also posts the occassional photo of her dog, Wilfredo.

Bas and Marije found Lisa through her blog. “Lisa is a successful self-taught artist, a point that resonated since Marije and myself are self-taught too,” Bas says. As an artist, Lisa found the importance of “downtime to experience and learn about life, meet others and get inspired.”

Hashtag Highlight: #followmeto with @muradosmann and @yourleo

Russian photographer Murad Osmann (@muradosmann) and his girlfriend Nataly Zakharova (@yourleo) travel constantly for work and they’ve come up with a unique and romantic perspective for sharing their experiences around the globe on Instagram that has caught the attention of publications like the Daily Mail and the Huffington Post. The entire project actually started as an accident: “I was taking pictures of everything and Nataly got annoyed, so she dragged me forward to move on. That’s how the first #followmeto was taken, and I quite liked the result so we have continued the series ever since.” Murad started using the hashtag #followmeto to catalog photos of Nataly leading him to landmarks and exotic places.

5 Must See Inspirational Films About Iphoneography:

There has been quite a few short films that have been great sources of inspiration for me. All of them highlight the beauty and power that iphoneography and the mobile photography movement has to offer. I think there’s something special about the immediacy and rawness of capturing a moment, as it happens during our daily lifes, then being about to edit that image and share it to the world, all through one hand held device.

I have compiled my top 5 list of must see inspirational films about iphoneography and even thrown in one more for good measure as it is so good I just had to include it even though it doesn’t fall into the iphoneography bracket.

Photo Friday with Mobile Photo Paris

Last week, the Paris Bastille Design Center’s photography exhibition was reserved exclusively for artists who could fit their gear into the palm of their hand. With the ever increasing allure of smaller, faster, and lighter technologies, it should not come as a surprise that some artists are trading in SLRs, multiple lenses, and flashes for a single tool. But it does.

At Mobile Photo Paris, eighteen photographers, amateurs and professionals, showcased their work in a new genre of art: cellphone photography. Some of the most notable pieces are Nadine Bénichou’s dizzying architectural perspectives and Loic Le Rumeur’s rainy day snapshots.

On the website, the Mobile Photo Paris statement reads:

“Cet événement est emblématique d’un mouvement qui bouleverse les dogmes techniques et artistiques. C’est une manière de redéfinir ce qu’est la photographie, dans le contexte du bouleversement numérique. [This event symbolizes a movement that challenges technical and artistic rules. It is a way to redefine photography in the context of the digital revolution.]” (Translation is my own.)

Many of the photographs are stunning, and for those that don’t use popular iPhone applications and filters, it wouldn’t even be possible to know that they were taken on a cellphone. Although the photographs are undoubtedly capable of evoking emotion, ideas, and acting as a vehicle for artistic expression like their film and digital predecessors, the medium creates contention.

As noted in The New York Times Photography Blog, the development has its critics. Many of them believe that photography loses something without a more conscientious focus, manual decisions, and an understanding of aperture, shutter, and exposure. It’s a reaction that may be comparable to film masters watching the ushering in of digital photography several years ago.

While technological advancement is inevitable and some of us may be inclined to write this off as people needing to ‘get with the times,’ it raises an interesting question. Is there a point at which technology and art can be so closely paired that something of the latter is lost or diminished? Or is this simply a question of sentimentality, not unlike how we may feel about a written letter in comparison to an email?
